Getting the wiki over the 1.0 line

From Home

This page will help us get all the articles "over the line", in other words nice and clean, even if we could add more depth, so we can go public about the wiki in it's 1.0 version.

How does it work?

Every article gets a guide OR a team of guides

  • some of us have spontaneously formed into a team and expressed energy to work that way!
  • others might take responsibility as a person (just like we did during the writers' week). The guide doesn't need to do everything him/herself, and might call in specific help when needed (using the Facebook group of the wikithon saying for instance "could someone help me with the format edit of the footnotes?).

Whether as a team or as an individual, the role of the guide(s) is to do whatever it takes to get the article to fulfill our collectively defined 1.0 criteria

Deadline: End of June!

'Guide(s) - in practice:

  • As individuals or as a team, they guides claim one or  or more articles below, by putting their full name!
  • Read the article, and use the second column to say what help you need, if any (also use the Facebook group, that might get our attention even more). You can also possible put text in red in the article itself to help direct people to where you need help.
  • Once you feel the article is ready to be public (it fulfills the collectively defined 1.0 criteria), say so in the second column ("OVER THE LINE" in capital letters, show pride!)
  • Celebrate on Facebook :-)

Quick visual checkers - in practice:

None of us has an eye for everything, and it's often good to have a second pair of eyes. So for articles that have one guide (not a team), let's have someone just visually run through the article.

  • If you've seen from the list below (or from Facebook) that an article is "OVER THE LINE", and the guide is not a team, put your name in the column of Quick Visual Checkers. (Don't claim it upfront, as you don't know when the article will be at the gate - perhaps you won't be available then. Claim it when it is at the gate).
  • Have a visual look at the article. It should be nice and clean and ready for public consumption. If anything doesn't hold up to that standard, change it! If you have time, you can go through it in more detail and check the 1.0 criteria.
  • When you feel good about it, put "Ready for the LIGHT!" in the 4th column!

Guidelines for Article collaboration (facebook posts)

We are now quite a few people in the facebook group (over 200). We have seen an increasing number of posts, so to keep the volume of communication at a manageable levels we have created a few guidelines. We want to encourage communication and collaboration. So these are not rules, only suggested practices that you may want to keep in mind to help us as a team.

DO - Trust yourself. If you feel good about posting in the facebook group, do it. Don't ask for permission.
DO - Ask for help. We are a friendly bunch eager to help each other.
DO - Post in an existing facebook article thread, if the article you are working on is linked in the thread post.
DO - Post a new thread in the facebook group, if there is no thread for the article you are working on. If so, DO include a direct link to the article, so it is easy to find.
DO - Post a new thread each time an article is OVER THE LINE or READY FOR THE LIGHT. We very much want to celebrate this together :)
CONSIDER - Turning off notifications for facebook group posts on articles that you are not working on. This can reduce your personal noise. This is done by clicking the "v" symbol in the upper right of the post -> Turn off notifications.
CONSIDER - Tagging specific people that you are collaborating with, as you are posting comments in a facebook group thread. This way, the people who are relevant to that article collaboration will be notified.
CONSIDER - Starting a facebook multi-chat-room and invite to the conversation only the small group of people who are already working on a specific article. This helps us off-load some of the more detailed collaboration communication away from the facebook group.
AVOID - Posting multiple threads about the same article just for collaboration purpose. With one thread per article we accumulate context for the work on each one. And it is possible to turn off notification for people who don't want to listen in.
DO NOT - be afraid of posting in the facebook group or messaging people in the group. :)

Let's go.. let's have fun and bring all the articles into the light :-)
